Photos from the Phillipine-American War, 1907 &1908

The Philippine-American war is little remembered today. This was a brutal war, fought in Southeast Asia, and was a precursor of the war in Vietnam, generations later.  Lawrence Wachenheim Sr enlisted in the Army and served in the Philippines in 1907-8.  This was a central event of his life.  I understand that - being a soldier was also formative for me, generations later.  I remembered him stating that he lied about his age in order to enlist.  He referred to the war as the "Philippine Insurrection".  Even though the war officially ended in 1902, hostilities continued until 1913.  There were atrocities on both sides.  Mark Twain was against this war. From the link above, Mark Twain "said the war betrayed the ideals of American democracy by not allowing the Filipino people to choose their own destiny".  As for the role in our family history, many of us have proudly served in the US Army as well as other military.
